Buzzz

My newest drawing is that of a watercolor style bee. I have always had an affinity for bees. I was very, very close with my grandma when I was young. My family always would joke that I was the only one she liked. I don’t have many memories of my childhood but there is one that really stayed with me. I remember my grandma and I were sitting in my backyard, she was always wanting to sit in the sun and tan. She was a fabulous women, and always wore a wig, had her makeup done, and perfectly manicured nails. Anyways, we were sitting in lawn chairs in the backyard and a bee was buzzing around me. I think I got scared and probably dramatically chirped for help! I remember my grandma just reached out and grabbed the bee and flung it away from me. She had zero fear of the bee, and told me, “don’t act afraid of the bee and it won’t want to sting you”. That lesson stuck in my head for some reason, and I have never acted afraid of bees ever since. I remember not long after this happened I was alone in my yard and there was a bee buzzing around my head, and I reached out and grabbed it in my hand, but for some silly reason I held onto it, and guess what… I got stung. I learned a lesson in that as well.

Many years later, when I was in my 30’s, I took a trip to my grandmas grave. I always know where to find it, as she is buried under a huge beautiful willow tree. From the moment I set foot on the cemetery grounds, I had a bee buzzing around right by me. The whole time I was at her grave it stayed with me, and it followed me as I walked to my car. I 100% believe it was her spirit buzzing around me and visiting me. I felt no fear, only that of peace, and contentment.

So here is one of my renderings of a bee. I hope if you have a special connection with insects, nature, and things like that, that you will enjoy my rendering. Love you Gram! 🐝💛
